Claude Usage Report 2026: Global Data
How the world actually uses Claude, from the latest Anthropic Economic Index release: 121 countries ranked by per-capita usage, the augmentation vs automation split, the top request topics, and the work tasks that show up most in real conversations.
Quick answer: Australia leads the world in per-capita Claude usage in 2026 at 6.4x its population share, ahead of Singapore (5.81x) and Switzerland (5.02x). Globally, 51.4% of conversations are collaborative augmentation, 43.4% of usage looks like work, and content creation and copywriting is the top request topic at 22.7% of conversations.

What is the Anthropic Economic Index?
The Anthropic Economic Index is a public dataset, published by Anthropic under a CC BY 4.0 license, that measures how Claude is actually used.
It is built from anonymized, aggregated conversation content from Claude chat and Cowork sessions. No individual users can be identified. Conversation content is matched to job tasks from O*NET, the US government's occupational task catalog. Two definitions matter for reading this report:
- Anthropic Usage Index (AUI): a country's share of Claude usage divided by its share of the world's working-age population. An index of 1.0 means usage is exactly proportional to population. An index of 2.0 means twice what population alone would predict.
- Augmentation vs automation: conversation styles, not job outcomes. Augmentation means the person stays actively involved (iterating, learning, co-editing). Automation means the person directs Claude to complete the task.
One caveat before the numbers: this data describes observed usage patterns only. Occupation figures mean "conversations matched to tasks commonly done in that occupation," not "people in that occupation are using Claude." The release is a snapshot with no trend series, and it supports no conclusions about job displacement or job security.
Which countries use Claude the most in 2026?
Ranked by the Anthropic Usage Index, adoption concentrates in wealthy, English-speaking, and Northern European economies. Australia tops the list at 6.40, followed by Singapore (5.81), Switzerland (5.02), Luxembourg (4.85), and New Zealand (4.84).

Claude usage relative to working-age population share · 1.0x = global average · May 2026
Source: Anthropic Economic Index, May 2026 snapshot. Index = share of global Claude usage divided by share of global working-age population.
Australians use Claude at 6.4x the rate their population share would predict, the highest of any of the 121 countries covered in the May 2026 Anthropic Economic Index.
Rankings worth calling out: South Korea (3.78, #14) and Israel (3.05, #21) lead their regions. Germany sits at 2.40 (#26) and Japan at 1.91 (#32). Brazil (0.96, #61) lands exactly at the median country. The world's two most populous countries index far below their population weight: India at 0.30 (#102) and Nigeria at 0.24 (#106). This is the familiar shape of technology diffusion, with early concentration in high-income economies and a long tail still ramping.

Augmentation vs automation: how people work with Claude
Globally, conversations split almost evenly between collaborative and delegated styles: 51.4% augmentation vs 48.6% automation.

The split varies meaningfully by country. The most augmentation-leaning countries are Norway (58.7%), Denmark (57.7%), and Belgium (57.3%), where conversations skew toward iterating and learning with the model. The most automation-leaning are Zimbabwe (57.6%), Mongolia (57.4%), and Uganda (56.0%), where a larger share of conversations hand Claude a task to complete outright. Higher-index countries tend to sit on the augmentation side, but the gap between the extremes is only about 16 percentage points. Nowhere does either style dominate.
Work, personal, and coursework: where Claude time goes
Work is the largest slice globally at 43.4%, but personal use is close behind at 40.2%. Claude in 2026 is nearly as much a life tool as a work tool.

The geography of this split tells three distinct stories:
- Work-first countries: Brazil (57.4% work), the United Arab Emirates (54.6%), Israel (53.3%), Vietnam (53.1%), and Thailand (53.1%).
- Personal-first countries: the United States (49.7% personal), Canada (49.6%), Iceland (48.9%), and Germany (48.7%).
- Student-heavy countries: Tunisia (51.5% coursework), Algeria (47.1%), Indonesia (45.9%), Mozambique (43.3%), and Bolivia (43.3%). In several emerging markets, Claude usage looks first and foremost like an education tool.
What people use Claude for: top request topics
Across every topic Anthropic classifies, writing dominates. Content creation and copywriting is the single largest request topic at 22.7% of conversations, roughly double software development (11.5%), which many observers assume is the top use case.

Which occupations' tasks show up most in Claude conversations?
When conversation content is matched to O*NET occupational tasks, computer and mathematical tasks lead at 23.8% of global usage. The next tiers are creative, educational, and commercial rather than purely technical.

Methodology and limitations
All figures come from the Anthropic Economic Index May 2026 release (published June 24, 2026), covering Claude chat and Cowork usage.
Figures are derived from anonymized, aggregated conversation content and cannot be tied to individual users. Key limitations:
- The data describes observed Claude usage only: not AI overall, not the labor market, and not who users are.
- Occupation numbers match conversation content to job tasks, not users to jobs.
- This release is a snapshot with no trend series. It cannot show usage rising or falling, and it cannot support claims that usage predicts job automation or displacement.
- Countries and occupations below privacy-aggregation thresholds are not published. A missing value means "not published," never a measured zero.
- The 5-hours-to-40-minutes task-time comparison is an automated classifier estimate bucketed by order of magnitude, not a measured time study.

Frequently asked questions
Which country uses Claude the most in 2026?
Australia has the highest per-capita Claude usage of any country in the May 2026 Anthropic Economic Index, with an Anthropic Usage Index of 6.40, meaning Australians account for 6.4x more Claude usage than their share of the world's working-age population would predict. Singapore (5.81) and Switzerland (5.02) rank second and third.
Where does the United States rank in Claude usage?
The United States ranks 12th of 121 countries with a usage index of 3.87. In absolute terms the US remains one of the largest Claude markets, but relative to population, eleven countries index higher, including Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Canada, and Norway.
What do people use Claude for the most?
Content creation and copywriting is the most common request topic worldwide at 22.7% of conversations, followed by education and learning (13.2%), software development (11.5%), and research and intelligence (10.9%).
Is Claude used more for work or personal life?
Work leads, but narrowly: 43.4% of classified conversations globally look like work, 40.2% like personal life, and 16.5% like coursework. In the US and Canada, personal use actually exceeds work use.
Does Claude mostly automate tasks or help people do them?
Slightly more augmentation than automation: in 51.4% of conversations the person stays actively involved in the task, while in 48.6% they direct Claude to complete it. Anthropic notes these describe conversation styles, not job outcomes.
How much time do people save using Claude?
Anthropic's classifier estimates that tasks that would take a person working alone roughly 5 hours ran to about 40 minutes of conversation with Claude. This is an automated, order-of-magnitude estimate from conversation content, not a measured time study.
How many countries does the Anthropic Economic Index cover?
The May 2026 release publishes an Anthropic Usage Index for 121 countries, along with 51 US states and districts, 22 job categories, and 718 occupations with published usage (of 923 tracked).
