Humanoid robots stopped being a demo category in 2026 and became a delivery-schedule category. In September alone, Agility unveiled [Digit 5 with more than \*\*$300 million\*\* in milestone-conditioned orders](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com), Boston Dynamics opened a [training center for Atlas inside Hyundai's Georgia Metaplant](https://bostondynamics.com/news/boston-dynamics-opens-robotics-metaplant-application-center-to-train-humanoid-robots-for-manufacturing-tasks/?ref=insidedeeptech.com), and Figure showed [Helix 2.5 working zero-shot in 30 unseen homes](https://www.figure.ai/news/helix-2-5-zero-shot-30-home-generalization?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

That cluster of news is why Inside Deep Tech's [Physical AI Market Report: October 2026](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/physical-ai-market-report-october-2026/) became one of the fastest-read posts on the site. The same month, the IFR reported that factories installed about [\*\*603,000\*\* industrial robots in 2025 and that the operational stock passed \*\*5.079 million\*\*](https://ifr.org/ifr-press-releases/news/five-million-robots-now-operate-in-factories-globally?ref=insidedeeptech.com). Humanoids are trying to break into that installed base, not replace it overnight.

This full guide compares the six humanoid robots that matter most for buyers and investors in October 2026: Figure 03, Tesla Optimus, Boston Dynamics Atlas, Agility Digit 5, Unitree G1 and H2, and Apptronik Apollo 2\. It covers specs, real deployments, funding, how to evaluate a pilot, and the honest limits that company press releases leave out.

## Key Takeaways

- Agility has the longest work record: [Digit 4 logged \*\*65,000+\*\* hours](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com) before Digit 5.
- Figure's [Helix 2.5 lifted zero-shot home success from \*\*9%\*\* to \*\*56%\*\*](https://www.figure.ai/news/helix-2-5-zero-shot-30-home-generalization?ref=insidedeeptech.com).
- Hyundai plans to [start with \*\*25,000\*\* Atlas units across its plants](https://bostondynamics.com/news/boston-dynamics-opens-robotics-metaplant-application-center-to-train-humanoid-robots-for-manufacturing-tasks/?ref=insidedeeptech.com).
- Unitree is the only audited view: [industrial work was \*\*9.01%\*\* of humanoid revenue](https://static.sse.com.cn/stock/disclosure/announcement/c/202603/002178%5F20260320%5FOE27.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com).
- Tesla Optimus is still pre-production: [initial builds go to its own Optimus Academy](https://ir.tesla.com/%5Fflysystem/s3/sec/000162828026049213/tsla-20260722-gen.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

⚠️

Rank humanoid robots by evidence, not by video. The best single question for any vendor: how many paid robot-hours has this exact model logged at a customer site, and who outside the company verified it?

## Where humanoid robots fit in the 2026 robot market

Classical industrial robots are the backdrop. The IFR's World Robotics 2026 release counted about [\*\*603,000\*\* installs in 2025, up \*\*11%\*\*, and a global stock of \*\*5.079 million\*\* units](https://ifr.org/ifr-press-releases/news/five-million-robots-now-operate-in-factories-globally?ref=insidedeeptech.com). Inside Deep Tech's [IFR World Robotics 2026 full guide](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/ifr-world-robotics-2026-603k-installs-five-million-stock-full-guide/) breaks that down by country and segment.

Humanoid volumes are tiny by comparison. Unitree's exchange filing cites industry data putting [global 2025 humanoid shipments at around \*\*17,000\*\* units, with Unitree above \*\*5,500\*\*](https://static.sse.com.cn/stock/disclosure/announcement/c/202603/002178%5F20260320%5FOE27.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com). Even if every humanoid builder doubles output, the category stays a rounding error next to the industrial base until the late 2020s.

So the useful question is not whether humanoid robots will replace industrial arms. It is which jobs inside existing factories and warehouses are still done by people because the work is too varied for fixed automation: tote moves, part sequencing, machine tending, and kitting. That is where every serious program below is aiming first.

## Figure 03 and Helix: the AI-first humanoid

Figure introduced its third-generation robot on October 9, 2025\. Figure 03 was redesigned around its Helix vision-language-action model, with cameras offering [twice the frame rate, one-quarter the latency and a \*\*60%\*\* wider field of view](https://www.figure.ai/news/introducing-figure-03?ref=insidedeeptech.com), plus fingertip sensors that detect [forces as small as three grams](https://www.figure.ai/news/introducing-figure-03?ref=insidedeeptech.com). It was also designed for volume production at Figure's BotQ facility.

Figure's factory evidence comes from its predecessor. In an 11-month deployment at BMW Plant Spartanburg, Figure 02 logged [\*\*1,250+\*\* hours of runtime, loaded \*\*90,000+\*\* parts and contributed to production of \*\*30,000+\*\* X3 vehicles](https://www.figure.ai/news/production-at-bmw?ref=insidedeeptech.com). Those are company-reported figures, not BMW-published KPIs.

The bigger 2026 bet is software. Helix 2.5, pretrained on Figure's Index human-video dataset, ran three whole-body tasks in 30 Bay Area homes with no local data, and Index pretraining alone raised full-task success [from \*\*9%\*\* to \*\*56%\*\*](https://www.figure.ai/news/helix-2-5-zero-shot-30-home-generalization?ref=insidedeeptech.com). To train the next models, Figure signed with Nscale for [up to \*\*100,000\*\* Vera Rubin GPUs and an initial \*\*$3.5 billion\*\* commitment](https://www.figure.ai/news/figure-and-nscale-sign-strategic-partnership?ref=insidedeeptech.com), on top of a Series C at a [\*\*$39 billion\*\* post-money valuation](https://www.figure.ai/news/series-c?ref=insidedeeptech.com). For the company history, see Inside Deep Tech's [Figure AI deep dive](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/figure-ai-a-deep-dive-into-the-humanoid-robot-startup/).

## Tesla Optimus: the scale bet still waiting on production

Tesla has the largest manufacturing machine behind any humanoid program and the thinnest public evidence. Its July 22, 2026 shareholder update says the Model S and X lines at Fremont were decommissioned and first-generation Optimus lines are being installed, with production expected soon and initial units used in its [Optimus Academy for training data collection](https://ir.tesla.com/%5Fflysystem/s3/sec/000162828026049213/tsla-20260722-gen.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

On the April 2026 earnings call, Elon Musk declined to give a 2026 production target, said Optimus has [\*\*10,000\*\* unique parts on an all-new line](https://electrek.co/2026/04/22/tesla-optimus-production-fremont-model-sx-line/?ref=insidedeeptech.com), and pointed to a second Optimus factory at Giga Texas for around summer 2027\. Electrek noted that Musk's earlier forecast of [roughly \*\*10,000\*\* robots built in 2025](https://electrek.co/2026/04/22/tesla-optimus-production-fremont-model-sx-line/?ref=insidedeeptech.com) was missed.

Inside Deep Tech's view: Optimus is the program with the most upside if Tesla's cost-down playbook transfers, and the least verifiable today. There is no audited unit count, no customer deployment and no public spec sheet for the Gen 3 robot. Treat any Optimus volume number as guidance until Tesla reports it in a shareholder letter.

## Boston Dynamics Atlas: Hyundai's factory humanoid

The electric product Atlas launched at CES on January 5, 2026, with all 2026 deployments [already committed to Hyundai's RMAC and Google DeepMind](https://bostondynamics.com/blog/boston-dynamics-unveils-new-atlas-robot-to-revolutionize-industry/?ref=insidedeeptech.com) and more customers planned for early 2027\. Its spec sheet is the most complete of any Western humanoid: [56 degrees of freedom, 2.3 m reach, 50 kg instant lift, 4-hour battery and IP67 rating](https://bostondynamics.com/atlas/?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

On September 21, 2026, Boston Dynamics opened the Robotics Metaplant Application Center at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America near Savannah. Atlas is training on parts logistics and sequencing, with component assembly targeted by 2030\. Hyundai says it will begin with [\*\*25,000\*\* units across Hyundai and Kia plants and build a U.S. facility able to make \*\*30,000\*\* robots a year](https://bostondynamics.com/news/boston-dynamics-opens-robotics-metaplant-application-center-to-train-humanoid-robots-for-manufacturing-tasks/?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

Atlas has the strongest captive customer in the field, which is both its edge and its limit. Independent buyers cannot get one before 2027, and Hyundai's unit plan is an intention, not a delivery record. Inside Deep Tech's earlier explainer on [what Atlas can actually do](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/boston-dynamics-atlas-what-the-robot-can-actually-do/) covers the research history.

## Agility Digit 5: the humanoid with the longest work record

Agility is the only company here with years of paid deployment. Digit 4 has logged [more than \*\*65,000\*\* operating hours](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com) at sites including GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, and reached a [cumulative \*\*100,000\*\*-tote milestone at GXO with about \*\*98%\*\* on-task accuracy](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

Digit 5, unveiled September 15, 2026, targets cooperatively safe work near people without fences. It adds [\*\*40%\*\* more payload, up to 22.7 kg, and a 90-minute battery that charges in 9 minutes for more than 20 hours of work per day](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com). Agility says it had [more than \*\*$300 million\*\* in multi-year Digit 5 orders as of May 2026](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com), subject to contractual milestones, with early access in the first half of 2027.

The full breakdown of safety architecture, specs and order terms is in Inside Deep Tech's [Agility Digit 5 full guide](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/agility-digit-5-humanoid-robot-full-guide/).

## Unitree G1 and H2: China's volume and price leader

Unitree listed on Shanghai's STAR Market on August 19, 2026, and its exchange filings are the only audited look at humanoid economics anywhere. Unitree shipped [more than \*\*5,500\*\* humanoids in 2025](https://static.sse.com.cn/stock/disclosure/announcement/c/202603/002178%5F20260320%5FOE27.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com), while its average humanoid selling price fell [\*\*71.8%\*\* in two years](https://static.sse.com.cn/stock/disclosure/announcement/c/202603/002178%5F20260320%5FOE27.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

The revenue mix is the reality check. In the first nine months of 2025, research and education took [\*\*73.60%\*\* of humanoid revenue and industrial application only \*\*9.01%\*\*](https://static.sse.com.cn/stock/disclosure/announcement/c/202603/002178%5F20260320%5FOE27.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com), and the filing says corporate guided tours made up 50% to 70% of that industrial slice. The entry-level G1 lists [from \*\*$13.5K\*\*, weighs about 35 kg and runs about two hours per battery](https://www.unitree.com/g1?ref=insidedeeptech.com). Inside Deep Tech's [Unitree filing breakdown](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/unitree-humanoid-robot-filing/) has the line-by-line numbers.

## Apptronik Apollo 2: the modular, partner-heavy challenger

Austin-based Apptronik closed a [\*\*$520 million\*\* Series A-X on February 11, 2026, taking its Series A past \*\*$935 million\*\*](https://apptronik.com/news-collection/apptronik-closes-over-935-million-series-a?ref=insidedeeptech.com) and total capital raised to nearly $1 billion. Its named partners include [Mercedes-Benz, GXO Logistics, Jabil and Google DeepMind](https://apptronik.com/news-collection/apptronik-closes-over-935-million-series-a?ref=insidedeeptech.com), where Apollo serves as a hardware platform for Gemini Robotics.

Apollo 2 differs from rivals in one practical way: it can run on legs or on a [wheeled base for high-throughput stations](https://apptronik.com/apollo/apollo-2?ref=insidedeeptech.com), with swappable batteries and actuators Apptronik rates at [\*\*90%+\*\* energy efficiency](https://apptronik.com/apollo/apollo-2?ref=insidedeeptech.com). The company has not published payload, height or deployment-hour figures for Apollo 2, so buyers should ask for them directly.

Inside Deep Tech's take: Agility leads on operating evidence, Figure leads on AI and capital, Boston Dynamics leads on a captive factory channel, Unitree leads on volume and price, and Tesla leads on manufacturing potential. No single company leads on all five, which is why this race is still open.

## Which humanoid robot fits which job

**Tote handling and warehouse flows.** Digit is the default shortlist entry because it has done this job longest, at GXO and other sites. Digit 5's higher payload and longer runtime target the gaps customers raised on Digit 4, per [Agility](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

**Automotive sequencing and heavy parts.** Atlas is built for this, with a [30 kg sustained lift and IP67 sealing](https://bostondynamics.com/atlas/?ref=insidedeeptech.com), but supply is tied to Hyundai until 2027\. Figure is the other automotive reference through its BMW work.

**Research, education and model development.** Unitree's low list prices and open developer ecosystem explain why research and education dominate its revenue. Apptronik's Apollo also serves as a reference body for Google DeepMind's Gemini Robotics work, per [Apptronik](https://apptronik.com/news-collection/apptronik-closes-over-935-million-series-a?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

**Homes and general-purpose tasks.** Nobody is selling a proven home humanoid yet. Figure's Helix 2.5 home trials are the strongest published evidence, and they remain internal evaluations.

## How to evaluate a humanoid robot pilot

- **Start with the task, not the robot.** Tote moves, sequencing and machine tending are the proven first jobs. Household and general-purpose claims are still lab or home-trial results.
- **Ask for robot-hours at a paying site.** Digit's 65,000+ hours and Figure 02's 1,250+ BMW hours are the public benchmarks to compare against.
- **Check the safety case.** Fenceless work near people depends on standards still in draft, such as ISO 25785-1, cited in the [Digit 5 release](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com).
- **Price the whole system.** Inside Deep Tech's [humanoid robot cost guide](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/how-much-does-a-humanoid-robot-cost-in-2026/) covers integration, software and support beyond list price.
- **Judge the model roadmap.** The AI stack, covered in the [robot foundation models primer](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/robot-foundation-models-the-ai-brains-behind-physical-ai/), decides whether skills transfer across sites.

## Honest limits: what the humanoid data does not show

- **Almost every metric is company-reported.** Only Unitree's numbers sit in a regulated filing, and they describe one Chinese issuer.
- **Industrial work is still a small slice.** Unitree's 9.01% industrial share is mostly tours, per [its filing](https://static.sse.com.cn/stock/disclosure/announcement/c/202603/002178%5F20260320%5FOE27.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com).
- **Orders are conditional.** Agility's [$300M+ book is milestone-conditioned](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com), and Hyundai's Atlas plan is a stated intention.
- **Home results are not factory economics.** Helix 2.5's [56% zero-shot success](https://www.figure.ai/news/helix-2-5-zero-shot-30-home-generalization?ref=insidedeeptech.com) is an internal home evaluation, not a cost-per-task figure.
- **Tesla has no public spec sheet or count.** Its update confirms [lines being installed, not robots shipped](https://ir.tesla.com/%5Fflysystem/s3/sec/000162828026049213/tsla-20260722-gen.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

## Frequently asked questions

#### What is the best humanoid robot in 2026?

It depends on the job. Agility Digit has the most paid operating time, with [65,000+ hours on Digit 4](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com). Boston Dynamics Atlas has the most complete industrial spec sheet. Figure leads on published AI generalization with [Helix 2.5](https://www.figure.ai/news/helix-2-5-zero-shot-30-home-generalization?ref=insidedeeptech.com). Unitree G1 is the cheapest widely sold option.

#### How many humanoid robots were shipped in 2025?

Industry data quoted in Unitree's exchange filing puts global 2025 humanoid shipments at [around 17,000 units, with Unitree above 5,500](https://static.sse.com.cn/stock/disclosure/announcement/c/202603/002178%5F20260320%5FOE27.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com). That compares with about [603,000 industrial robots installed](https://ifr.org/ifr-press-releases/news/five-million-robots-now-operate-in-factories-globally?ref=insidedeeptech.com) in the same year.

#### Can you buy a humanoid robot today?

Yes, in limited forms. Unitree sells the G1 [from $13.5K](https://www.unitree.com/g1?ref=insidedeeptech.com), mainly for research and education. Atlas units for 2026 are [already committed to Hyundai and Google DeepMind](https://bostondynamics.com/blog/boston-dynamics-unveils-new-atlas-robot-to-revolutionize-industry/?ref=insidedeeptech.com). Digit 5 early access starts in the [first half of 2027](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

#### Is Tesla Optimus in production?

Not at scale as of October 2026\. Tesla's Q2 2026 update says it is installing first-generation Optimus lines at Fremont and that [initial builds will go to its Optimus Academy](https://ir.tesla.com/%5Fflysystem/s3/sec/000162828026049213/tsla-20260722-gen.pdf?ref=insidedeeptech.com) for training data, not to customers.

#### Which companies use humanoid robots in factories?

Public examples include GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada with [Agility Digit](https://www.agilityrobotics.com/content/agility-unveils-digit-5-humanoid-robot-built-for-cooperatively-safe-work-at-scale?ref=insidedeeptech.com), BMW Spartanburg with [Figure](https://www.figure.ai/news/production-at-bmw?ref=insidedeeptech.com), and Hyundai's Metaplant with [Atlas training at RMAC](https://bostondynamics.com/news/boston-dynamics-opens-robotics-metaplant-application-center-to-train-humanoid-robots-for-manufacturing-tasks/?ref=insidedeeptech.com).

#### How does this guide relate to the Physical AI Market Report?

The [October 2026 Physical AI Market Report](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/physical-ai-market-report-october-2026/) tracks monthly numbers across humanoids, AMRs, cobots and industrial robots. This guide is the evergreen comparison of the humanoid programs that report covers.

## What to watch next

Four signals will separate the leaders over the next six months: Digit 5 early-access deployments in 2027, any customer-published KPIs from BMW or Hyundai, Tesla's first reported Optimus unit count, and a second public humanoid filing to compare against Unitree. Inside Deep Tech tracks each one monthly in the [Physical AI Market Report](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/physical-ai-market-report-october-2026/), with the industrial baseline in the [IFR World Robotics 2026 guide](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/ifr-world-robotics-2026-603k-installs-five-million-stock-full-guide/) and the deployment leader profiled in the [Digit 5 guide](https://www.insidedeeptech.com/agility-digit-5-humanoid-robot-full-guide/).
